Planning a School Carnival: How to Build Your Station Mix

Choose game, food and entertainment stations that fit your school's compound, student headcount and time window.

Start with headcount and space

Tell the vendor how many students will attend and whether the carnival runs in a field, hall, sheltered court or a combination. Indoor areas limit inflatable height and need accessible power points. A field opens up bouncy castles and large inflatable games but needs a wet weather plan. Share a site photo or layout sketch when you ask for a quotation.

Split the stations into three zones

A balanced carnival uses three types of station:

  • Active play. Bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses and ball pits. Check the dimensions and operating requirements of each proposed model before allocating space. See the bouncy castle catalogue and inflatable games catalogue for published dimensions.
  • Game booths. Table box games, deluxe game booths and carnival target games. Compare the game format and each unit's space requirements; do not assume that all booth games take the same time or floor area. Browse the full range on the carnival games and booths page.
  • Food and entertainment. Live food stations such as popcorn, candy floss or prata, plus photo booths, balloon twisting or a magic show. Confirm the selected food station's power, preparation and serving requirements; these vary by menu and format. See the carnival food page for the published menu.

Compare real station formats

The published Carnival Ring Toss involves tossing rings over rows of pegs, while Arcade Basketball uses digital score tracking. These are different activity formats. Ask which suits your school programme and how each would be operated, rather than choosing only by station count.

Match the time window

If your school has a half-day, recess or assembly slot, include that window in the brief. Tell the vendor the exact start and end time. For the same student headcount, a shorter window leaves less time for each activity. Ask how groups will rotate and whether the proposed station mix can accommodate your timetable; a catalogue description does not establish throughput. Ask the vendor to recommend a station count based on your headcount and duration.

Confirm what each station includes

For every station in the quotation, check whether delivery, setup, collection and any staffing are included. Food stations may need confirmation on ingredients and serving quantities. Ask separately about power cables, tentage and tables if your venue does not provide them.
